Writer S.E. Hinton drew fire from readers on Twitter after she denied that two of the characters in her classic young adult novel “The Outsiders” were gay. Though many of Hinton’s fans are eager to read these shades of queerness in her year-old story, she has repeatedly, and controversially, denied that her characters are gay ― and last week, she went so far as to claim that she was “being attacked for being hetero.”.
Hinton says that she has gay friends (uh-oh), but ultimately just decides to agree that while others can have a different reading of the book, she simply didn’t write the characters that way. This is a list of gay characters in fiction, i.e. characters that either self-identify as gay or have been identified by outside parties to be gay, becoming part of gay media.
You can interpret characters were there a gay character in ot the book you want, but if you’re going to ask the author for their interpretation of their own characters they wrote, don’t be surprised when they give you an answer that doesn’t match with yours. S.E. Hinton wasn’t hinting towards them being gay, that wasn’t her intention, and that’s okay.
The series leans into the queerness more. She did not disrespect or attack anyone even after all of you decided to attack her when you didn't even know WHY she asked in the first place. Though I do think it is fair to consider the novel heavily queer coded, Good Omens the television series is much more explicit in its depictions of queerness.
