The first half of the book is mostly him telling us about his obsession with Oliver. I like it more than the movie, because it opens us up to what Elio wants, what he is too afraid to go after, and what he does go after. The most boring movie on planet Earth. Say what you will about the little minx, but that final scene was impressive. That's why Hammer was such an odd choice, because he looked so much older, versus a younger looking 24 year old who would have seemed much more part of the group-- think of the scene at the outdoor disco--Hammer looks very out of place, even though we can assume that there were other 24 year olds there too.
